Rock collecting is a hobby for the entire family. It is fun and educational. Rocks are everywhere so you do not have to invest much money. The best places to look for rocks is where the ground has been disturbed like construction sites, river banks, lake shores or wind-worn areas. You can add to your collection by buying rocks from collectors, rock shops or the internet.
To startr rock collection you will need a hammer, light weight goggles for eye protection and storage containers. A good magnifier and identification chart are helpful. Don't use a carpenter's hammer or a cheap discount one. You need one with a flathead on one side and a pick on the other. Looking through the lens should give you a clear view with no internal reflections and bright highlights.
The rocks need to be 1.5 inches in all dimensions. You can then have more rocks which are easier to display. Always label your rocks before storing. This size is large enough to chip and scratch to look at without harming their appearance. To make your rocks look nicer, they can be polished with a rock tumbler.
