Misconceptions About Mission Work

Working in the mission field requires dedication. It is a calling which needs to be heard correctly. The first consideration in going abroad as a missionary requires an understanding that they will not have the comforts of home such as modern toilets and bath facilities, and good health care. Another major point of concern is the disconnection with the family - not being able to attend family weddings, graduation, baby shower and other events.

A major misconception about mission work is that these people will live "happily ever after". The fact is that missionary work is hard and challenging. Making converts is not easy. Language barriers and cultural differences are major stumbling blocks. After all the hard work there may be no converts.

Supplies for missionaries is another misconception. People send their old clothing to them thinking they don't need "good clothes". Final misconception is that missionaries are super-spiritual individuals. Missionaries are normal Christians. Being in the mission field can cause great stress on their family life. Some missionaries even ended up getting divorced.
