In 1976 The Society for Accessible Travel and Hospitality (SATH) was founded. This is a membership organization founded to raise awareness of the needs of travelers with disabilities and to expand travel opportunities for them in the USA and abroad. Members include travel professionals, people with disabilities both individuals and corporations.
There are other agencies which specialize in helping disabled travelers such as "Accessible Journeys" and "Able Travel Source". For children with disabilities "Algenglow Adventures" is great. For those interested in swimming and diving"Our Ocean Dreams" is the perfect agency. If you prefer a B&B, check with "InnSeeker Bed and Breakfast Search". They know which B&Bs are wheelchair accessible. This is important knowledge before booking. Also, find out if there is an elevator for upstairs rooms.
Once you have decided on the destination, call the hotel or motel in advance and specifically describe what the handicapped traveler will require to see if they have such accommodation available. Talk to someone who has actually been in that room to describe it to you. If it satisfies the needs, have them put a "preferred hold" on it for the dates that you need it.
