Jaisalmer is often called the golden city.For many years it remained unaffected by outside influences. When shipping became populsr, and caravans got fewer and fewer till they disappeared, the importance of Jaisalmer also declined. Inside the city you will still see the medieval majesty. The streets are narrow with magnificent palaces, "havelis" ( gorgeous homes) and temples on both sides. You will also find all kinds of craftsmen plying tgeir crafts by the roadside orin front of ther homes. You will als see camels everywhere. They have een called "the ships of the desert".
Every January/February the Desert Festival is held. This is the perfect time to visit Jaisalmer. The entire city is athed in music of all kinds of melodious tunes. There are folk dances, interesting comprtitions such as the turban-tying competition, Mr. Desert contest, and camel races. Colorful crafts of all kinds are set up i interesting bazaars. All this is against he backdrop of the famous sand dunes , specially spectacularly on full mon nights. These are unforgettable moments, not to be missed.
A visit to Jaisalmer is the nearest you will come to a visit to the land of the Arabian Nights.
