Not only do Indian potters create beautiful terracotta pottery but they also produce outstanding Blue-glaze pottery. The areas best known for this form of pottery are Delhi, Kashmir, Jaipur (in Rajasthan), and Khurja (in Uttar Pradesh). The Blue-glaze is made from Multani Mitti which is basically Fuller's Earth. It is an imported technique. This was first devised by Mughal artisans. They combined Chinese glazing technology with Persian decorative art.
When Blue-glaze was first 'invented' it was used only to decorate mosques, tombs and palaces. When the art reached Kashmir, they took full advantage of it and created all kinds of artful and fascinating objects.
In the twenty-first century the clientele is much more sophisticated and so the traditional Persian designs have now been adapted to the desires and needs of the clients. As a result, in addition to the pots, jars, urns, and vases, you will also find tea sets, plates and glasses, cups and saucers, jugs, ash trays, and even napkin rings.
