Darjeeling is a place of beauty and relaxation. It is the perfect place for family vacations. A train goes up to it from the rail head which is lovingly called "Toy Train" as it runs on a very narrow gauge, and slowly winds its way up the twisting mountains. In places it goes so slow that children running by the tracks offer flowers to the travelers.

Ghoom Buddhist Monastery is a quaint place which houses palm leaf and paper manuscripts in the Tibetan script. This is one of the monasteries where the Dalai Lama stayed when he first had to leave Tibet. The Museum of Natural History offers a fine collection of Himalayan animals, birds, reptiles and insects. The Himalayan Zoological park is the only zoological center in India where you can see a snow leopard. It alsso houses Ussurian tigers and the Himalayan black bear.The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, established by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1954 after the conquest of Everest is worth a visit. For the adventurous, there is the Darjeeling- Rangit Ropeway -the longest ropeway in Asia.
No one can visit Darjeeling and not visit at least one of the Tea Plantations, known throughout the world for their unsurpassed Darjeeling tea flavor.
The best time to visit Darjeelng is between March and April, or between September and November.
