The Indian Saree

The Saree is the trational dress of Indian women. It crosses all class and caste barriers.  Sarees come in all fabrics, colors and styles. They differ in length from about 5 meters to 8 meter , and a width of about 45 inches. They are draped differently in different parts of the country. Some states have such typical designs that any Indian seeing them would know the state of origin  of that saree.

Red is considered an auspicious color in India so generally brides wear red, thogh some modern brides prefer pink. Sarees for weddings and other special occasions are very ornate with a lot of embroidery, often with gold and silver threads.  The borders and the end piece are also very ornate.

Putting on a saree is a real art. A blouse or choli and a petticoat  must be worn first. Hold one end of the saree at the waist, then after making sure that the other end reaches the ankle, tuck in the rest of the naterial into the petticoat. Take the saree around the waist once till the starting place is reached. Now take the other end and go around the waist again, this time ending up by putting the second end over the left shoulder so it hangs down to the waist. Now pleat the rest of the material, and tuck that in the petticoat. make sure the pleats are even. The part over the shoulder can be pleated and pinned, or just left loose.
