Things To Know Before Traveling To India

Before you travel to India, you will need to start your planning at least eight to ten weeks in advance of your departure date. Doing this will ensure that your departure goes smoothly. Check for documentation requirements you might need, such as an international passport or any other document for identification purposes.

It is advisable to see if there is a terrorism alert in India before traveling. Some areas can be restricted due to high terrorist activities and kidnappings. It's a good idea to travel with a group that knows the area. Traveling alone, even though English is the second language in India, can be dangerous. Try to be aware of your surroundings in large, crowded areas, such as marketplaces. This type of area is vulnerable for attacks. Some rural areas can also be restricted due to evacuation for flooding. Depending on the time of year you visit India, there could be frequent flooding.

Most large cities have an up-to-date hospital and lots of medical clinics but there are not many medical facilities in rural India. It is advisable to see your family physician at least four to eight weeks before your departure for a complete physical. They may also need to give you a vaccine. Have your physician write a detailed list of your current medications and why you are taking them, in case you should get sick while in India. Make sure you pack the necessary medications for your trip in your carry-on bag and pack one medication pack in your luggage. That way, if you do get separated from your necessary medications, you will have a spare. You should also pack a medical kit, making sure that you have an antibiotic and an anti-diarrhea drug on hand at all times. You need to start taking the diarrhea medicine immediately at the first sign of any trouble. If your symptoms get worse, start taking the antibiotic. Taking precautions with food and water is the first line of defense from getting this awful sickness.

Make sure to pack mosquito repellant. Using it, in addition to wearing long sleeves and tucking your pants into boots, will keep mosquitoes from biting. These mosquitoes may carry diseases, so it is important to protect yourself against them.

By following some of these common sense approaches to being safe when traveling outside the United States, you will be able to enjoy your time in India a whole lot more.
